Magnolia High School Band
How to Join The Band

General Membership

Any student who attends Magnolia High School may join the band program. Membership is open to all
students who want to a part of our team. That includes all students who learned how to play an
instrument in junior high and those who do not know how to play an instrument, but have an interest in
learning how. Many band programs in the state of Texas do not offer this but the MHS band does. If you
have never played an instrument before, we ask that you meet with the band directors to choose the
right instrument for you. If you have previous experience in junior high and you want to be a part of our
program, all you have to do is sign up for the class when you are choosing classes for your freshmen
year in high school. It is that simple and that easy.

Tryouts for Ensembles

Once you have decided to be a part of our program and you will be placed in our marching band class
during the fall semester. There are no auditions for marching band. Every member will be placed in first
period during the fall. During the Spring semester, every member auditions in order to be placed in one
of our many ensembles available. No matter your skill level, you will be placed in an ensemble, and
auditions will occur in December. Our ensembles include Wind Ensemble, Honor Band, Symphonic Band,
Concert Band, Drumline, Color Guard and Jazz Band. Drumline, Color Guard and Jazz Band have
separate auditions, and information on those ensembles are listed below. To be placed in one of the
four concert bands each member is required to play the following...

Major Scales - Two selected scales from the 12 major scales on your instrument. Each student does not
know what the scales will be, so practice all of your 12 major scales.

Chromatic Scale - This is full range of your horn. This means play from the lowest note to the highest
note back down to the lowest note on your instrument

All-Region Etude - These etudes are the prescribed selections that each instrument must use to audition
for the all-region band. There are three etudes. We use these etudes as a part of our selection process
to determine your placement within our band program in the spring. You will receive this music during
the summer band camp in August, so you have 4 months to prepare for your auditions.

All members of the MHS band that wishes to be part of our top two ensembles, is required to audition
for the Region 9 All-Region band. The auditions occur in December. Your placement in the all-region
band does not determine your placement in the MHS band, however you must audition. Those who do
not wish to audition for the all-region band will be placed in our Symphonic band or our Concert band in
the spring. With hard work, practice, and determination, you can do very well in the auditions for the
all-region band, and we encourage all of our students to try. It is a very high honor to be selected to the
all-region band

All-Region and All-State Band

These ensembles that are not offered at MHS, however it is a wonderful opportunity for our students to
be a part of. The All-Region ensemble is a band made up of the finest and most talented students in
Region 9. Magnolia High School belongs to this region, along with Spring, Klein, Conroe, Tomball,
Aldine, Houston, and many other school districts. In December the region holds auditions for placement
in one of the three all-region bands. If one of our students is selected, they will be invited to participate
in several rehearsals, at an area high school, with a very talented and prestigious band director. Many of
our clinicians are band directors from top quality high school bands and universities from around the
country. After the rehearsals the band will hold a concert for friends and family. This occurs in the month
of January. Being selected to the all-region band is a very high honor for our students.

If a member of our band is selected as one of the top musicians in the All-region band, they will
automatically be placed in the All-Area band. This band is made up of the finest musicians in a vast
area. MHS belongs to Area D which is made up of many schools in the Houston, Austin, and Central
Texas area. If you are selected in the Area band, you will be invited to participate in the auditions for

musician can achieve. Many students who are selected to the All-State band receive numerous
scholarships from universities around the United States.
